Life in the Slow Lane (is Not so Bad)

Things are going well. Usually I disassociate myself from my job, so it's a welcome pleasure to connect a part of my self-worth with my success at work. After busting my butt all year, I am seeing the rewards. My music school has doubled its private lesson enrollment goals for the month, as well as surpassing our private lesson enrollment goals for the year. Pretty sweet.

Four years ago I was at a club and some girl took an interest in me... and her first question was, "What do you do?" I told her what I "did" had no bearing on what I was. She was an attorney and I suspect she thought I was dodging the question. It's just that I take no personal pride in doing a good job at something that doesn't interest me personally. Don't get me wrong--I'm usually more than happy to "just pay the bills" and "work for the weekend," but I must admit, it's a pleasant change to work in my field of interest, be a supervisor, and have my own office.

Although with the economy being what it is, I've had to force myself to enforce new restrictions on myself: Now I pack a homemade lunch at least four work days a week, and I force myself to drive in the right-hand lane going 60 m.p.h. at least five days a week in order to save gas. Nowadays it's a rare commute that I can be found going over 70, and if I do, it's only to get into a better groove on the road. I "accidentally" bought a sport model car earlier in the year, so on occasion I still squeal my tires and race a little. It can't be helped. (I belong on a Harley getting 60 m.p.h./gallon but can't commit to that yet for my Beltway commute. Not sure if I want to risk life and limb to save on vehicle payments and gas.) Oh, yeah, and I really have reintroduced Spaghettios into my diet for the first time since childhood.

Pretty boring, huh? I think I prefer it to drama. I really do.

P.S. Top Ramen is really good. It always has been. It rocks with egg. But when you're out of eggs, try peanut butter for a Thai feel. Just make sure you have onion powder and some hot sauce. Best Ramen Ever. Best $0.50 meal ever.
