Asphalt exorcism

Roadtrip on a day off

Yesterday I had to have an asphalt exorcism. It was my day off, yet it felt like my phone was ringing off the hook. I logged into my work email to head off any looming disasters, gassed up my car, then hit the road. Text messages started coming in.

"Day off. Driviny," is what I replied.

I drove about 400 miles yesterday. Max. speed: 90 m.p.h. Reckless driving at some point? No doubt.

Anyway, here's a photo of one of the coolest things I saw yesterday. An abandoned church. Now, is it cool because Faith has been abandoned or is it cool that the abandonment of Faith scares me?

Not sure.

The light fixture and the font over the "Church of God of Prophecy," sign remind me of the "Silent Hill" sign in the movie, "Silent Hill." I went to Silent Hill (Centralia, PA) with a couple friends in hopes of seeing that church, but found it in southern Virginia all by myself with a chance turn of the head.

Last night I ran out of light before I expected to on my way back home from hell and couldn't get any photos on the scenic route. Found myself on a two-lane blacktop with twists, turns, and hills, and nothing to see but unexpected curves. No photos. I saw lots of trailers in the fading light. I felt thankful but not in a patronizing, disdainful way.

I still can't understand America. I guess I need to take a biiiiiig roadtrip. Because what I really wonder is what does most of America live like? This a question I've sought to answer for years. I've read lots of travel narratives but need to find the answer for myself.
